Zelenskyy and Trump Discuss Diplomacy, Winter Air Defense and Patriot Interceptor Production

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump met in New York on September 22, 2026, during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, with talks focused on possible de-escalatory steps, support for Ukraine ahead of winter and air defense.

The Office of the President of Ukraine said the two leaders discussed steps that could open a path to diplomacy and a winter air-defense package. The White House also published an official photo gallery documenting the bilateral meeting at U.N. Headquarters.

De-escalation and a possible diplomatic path

According to the Ukrainian presidency, Zelenskyy said both Ukraine and the United States want the war to end before winter and that the discussion covered potential de-escalatory steps that could create space for diplomacy.

The official statement did not announce a ceasefire agreement, a negotiating timetable or a finalized peace framework. The meeting should therefore be understood as a discussion of possible diplomatic steps rather than the conclusion of a new agreement.

Winter air defense

Another major topic was Ukraine’s air-defense requirement for the winter period. Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure remain exposed to missile and drone attacks, making the availability of interceptors a central issue for Kyiv.

The Ukrainian presidential statement says Zelenskyy and Trump discussed a winter air-defense package. It does not specify the number of systems or missiles involved, nor does it announce a delivery schedule.

Work toward Patriot interceptor production in Ukraine

The Ukrainian side also said that teams from the two countries are continuing work aimed at launching production of Patriot interceptors in Ukraine.

That would represent a different model from simply transferring existing stocks: local production could contribute to a longer-term supply base. However, the September 22 statement did not provide a factory location, production volume, investment amount or start date.

For that reason, UkraineView treats the project as an ongoing bilateral effort rather than a completed production agreement.

Official White House video

The White House published video of the bilateral meeting. The recording shows the two presidents speaking to the press before their talks.
