Ukraine is moving to improve how it treats foreign military volunteers and their families after relatives of nine Americans who died defending Ukraine described problems with notification, documentation, repatriation and benefits.

Some families learned about the death of their relative from fellow service members or social media before receiving official notification, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence.
