Trump Signs New Russia and Iran Sanctions Law

President Donald Trump has signed legislation expanding U.S. sanctions authorities against Russia and Iran, giving Washington additional tools to increase economic pressure on Moscow over its war against Ukraine.

The White House said Trump signed H.R. 5334, the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026.

The legislation expands sanctions and tariff authorities connected to Russia and provides additional mechanisms targeting economic activity that supports Moscow.

Pressure on Russian energy revenues

One of the central issues in Western sanctions policy has been Russia’s continuing ability to generate revenue from exports of oil, gas and other commodities.

The new legislation gives the U.S. government additional authority that can be used against Russia and entities involved in sustaining those revenue streams.

Why it matters for Ukraine

Ukraine has repeatedly called on its international partners to increase pressure on Russia’s energy revenues, defense industry and sanctions-evasion networks.

The new law comes while the United States continues both diplomatic efforts related to ending the war and military support for Ukraine.
