Ukraine’s General Staff estimates that Russia lost 1,855 unmanned aerial vehicles in a single day on October 4, another indication of the scale drones have reached in the war.
The figures were published by Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence on October 5.
According to the Ukrainian estimate, Russia also lost 2,020 personnel, 47 artillery systems, 727 vehicles and fuel tanks, two tanks and four armored fighting vehicles during October 4.
The ministry lists total estimated Russian personnel losses since February 24, 2022 at approximately 1,542,720 as of October 5.
These are official Ukrainian military estimates. They are not independently verified casualty figures, and the Ministry of Defence states that its data are being updated.
More Than 5,200 UAVs in Three Days
According to consecutive Ukrainian Defense Ministry reports, reported Russian UAV losses were 1,645 on October 2, 1,742 on October 3 and 1,855 on October 4.
Together, those Ukrainian estimates total 5,242 operational-tactical UAVs over three days.
The category should not automatically be interpreted as Shahed-type long-range attack drones. Ukraine’s published statistics use the broader classification “UAVs of operational-tactical level.”
Drones Are Reshaping the Battlefield
Unmanned systems are now used at extraordinary scale for reconnaissance, targeting, strike missions and other battlefield functions. Both sides have consequently invested heavily in electronic warfare, counter-drone systems and interceptor technology.
Ukraine’s October 4 talks with Germany also reflected this shift, with interceptor systems and air defense among the central subjects.
Ukraine’s Cumulative Estimates
- Personnel: approximately 1,542,720
- Tanks: 12,393
- Armored fighting vehicles: 25,487
- Artillery systems: 50,733
- Air-defense systems: 1,688
- Operational-tactical UAVs: 548,095
- Cruise missiles: 5,126
- Aircraft: 443
- Helicopters: 356
Independent verification of battlefield losses is difficult during an active war, and different organizations use different methodologies. UkraineView therefore attributes these numbers directly to Ukraine’s General Staff and Ministry of Defence.
