LONDON — Updated October 7, 2026. The United Kingdom has imposed a package of 31 Russia-related sanctions targeting LNG shadow-fleet vessels, Kremlin-linked disinformation networks and individuals the British government accuses of involvement in abuses against Ukrainian civilians and children.
The package was announced by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office on October 1 and remains one of the most significant recent European sanctions actions connected to the war in Ukraine.
LNG shadow fleet under pressure
The UK says part of the package targets vessels used to move Russian liquefied natural gas and generate revenue for the Russian state.
Sanctions beyond energy
The measures also cover disinformation networks and individuals the British government says were involved in torture, civilian abuses or the forced ideological re-education of Ukrainian children.
Analysis
The key question is enforcement. Sanctioning ships and entities can raise costs, but effectiveness depends on insurers, ports, banks and partner governments refusing to facilitate sanctioned trade.
