KYIV — Updated October 7, 2026. Ukraine has set new tasks for financing, production volumes and supply of long-range drones for 2027, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following an October 6 Staff meeting.
Zelenskyy said the central criterion is Ukraine’s ability to respond to Russian strikes in kind.
Long-range capability becomes annual planning
The announcement suggests long-range unmanned systems are being incorporated into regular force planning, funding and production targets rather than treated only as emergency wartime projects.
Why drones matter
Long-range drones can reach logistics, fuel infrastructure, weapons production and other targets far behind the front line. They can also be produced at lower cost and in larger numbers than many conventional long-range missiles.
Analysis
The strategic significance is continuity. Kyiv is planning long-range strike capacity beyond the current budget cycle. The practical test will be whether production volume, reliability and component supply can scale sustainably.
